Campaign money and a new Broad prize

The last round of campaign finance reports before the Nov.  8 Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board election are in,  and Elyse Dashew continues to lead the 14-candidate crew.  As of Oct. 24,  she reported raising almost $35,000  (plus $3,000 in loans).  Following her in fund-raising are Tim Morgan, who has raised almost $19,000,  and Aaron Pomis with about $17,500.

Unless there's some heavy-duty giving in the last couple weeks of the campaign,  this is turning out to be a much lower-budget affair that most insiders predicted.  Going into the race, many expected it would take $50,000 or more to win.

The Broad Foundation, which recently awarded its 2011 prize for urban education to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, announced today it's creating a new award to recognize excellence among charter-school chains. At the September event where CMS was awarded $550,000 in scholarships for the Class of 2012,  philanthropist Eli Broad voiced frustration with the slow pace of progress among school districts and hinted that he planned to create a charter prize soon.

The Broad Prize for Public Charter Schools,  to be awarded next year,  will provide $250,000 for college-readiness efforts in a large charter management group that demonstrates gains and achievement among low-income and minority students.  The 20 groups on the eligibility list include KIPP,  or the Knowledge Is Power Program,  which has a school in Charlotte.

Look at all the reports folks. You will see some patterns. Sue Gorman donated to Dashew, Pomis and Morgan. What does this mean? Members of the Babb family donated to all of them as well. What family supported Eric Davis when he took the Chair of the CMS Board? The Babb family. Who did the Observer support? Davis. Who do they support in this election? All three plus the token. Who supports all three? The Chamber folks...who also supported Davis. What PAC's support all three, real estate PACs. Bedfellows all of them. Want change? Vote anyone but this crowd. Want more of the same? More testing? More blame teachers? More Gorman era thinking? Vote this crowd. Want change? Vote anyone but them, Hurley, Wise, Nelson or the others.......

Gotta love how the media harumph about the bad influence money has on politics, then half their local political reporting consists of copy and pasting campaign finance reports.

LAZY LAZY LAZY

I agree with the previous poster - it's quite obvious who the "bought & paid for" slate is in this election.

Did the Observer ONCE mention that Tim Morgan is the brother of the Chamber of Commerce president?

Anon 11:06...

I believe the last count mentioning Tim Morgan's brother is 1,876,901 times, by the Observer and other posters...

As of today, 7,301 people have voted.

But keep getting the word out, you have until Tuesday to make sure everyone knows that fact.

Vote for Hurley, Nelson, and any other new people. Teachers, Morgan betrayed you. Do not let him forget that. P.S. Did anyone see the Eric Davis interview in which he said race WOULD be a factor in the new superintendent? Got to get these clowns out of here.

I worked in the classroom at a CMS school last year but have since fled to a system that actually seems to care about its students and uses logic in its decision-making process. However, since I was a part of CMS last year and contributed to this so-called Broad prize, I'm still waiting for my invite to the lavishly funded celebration.

Ericka Ellis-Stewart is a quality individual who has been dedicated to volunteering in the schools and working on important issues such as drop-out prevention, student achievement and parental involvement. She sees the issues caused by the current push-them-through crowd and wants to make a difference. CMS and the taxpayers of Char-Meck could not find a better school board representative to take a balanced approach.

Thank you for your autobiography...

Instead, vote for the Three Wise Men....Hurley, Nelson and Wise.

Of course race will be a factor in selecting the next superintendent.

Have you looked around lately at who is running everything else?

Just be thankful they uncovered the scandals in Atlanta and other school systems before our vacancy.

We need to scrutinize those race-based choices out there very carefully and not believe their publicists.

What's interesting about that interview is that they had the audacity to throw racism into the conversation quoting blog responses to various issues, yet threw the big, fat race card down asking whether race would be a factor in the hiring of the next super!

It's "ok" to call everyone else a racist if you believe you are not one, even though your words and actions prove otherwise.

If you noticed how many responses that article has received so far is one, which is mine.

I think I summed up their attempt to use racism as some sort of talking point.

The only way to avoid charges of racism from some people is to have a black , completely black, not just half-black, preferably from an obviously impoverished, inner-city background, with a bit of uneducated black vernacular still in her speech as the next superintendent.

Anything "less" will be called racist.

And that's just the way it is.

Wiley I love the campaign slogan, "No-one supports Hurley, Nelson or Wise - so support them"

Hurley - Wants Busing
Nelson - Doesnt like CMS
Wise - Doesn't have kids in CMS

Hard to wonder why they have no support.

Wiley Coyote said...

Anon 2:42...

I don't like CMS in the way it is run by educrats and politicians.

I don't have a kid in CMS either. He graduated but I don't cut off my opinions because he's out of school.

I still have to pay for ineffective programs like Bright Beginnings through my taxes and the rest of the broken system.

Reagrding Hurley, I must have missed the busing question where he said he supports it because he said THIS to the Observer:

Reduce busing kids all over the county to allow our children to learn more. Stop closing the schools.

Also, Jeff Wise has a 4 year old that will presumably enter CMS...

Go back and check your facts.

If you haven't voted, you might want to change your mind about YOUR candidates since you got all of these incorrect.

Anonymous said...

If those facts are incorrect then -

Wise has kids in CMS

Nelson - Loves CMS

and Hurley did not say in a video that CMS should break up schools and balance them based on race and test scores, (i.e busing).

Wise has ONE kid, who is currently in preschool.

Nelson doesn't like the way CMS is run and has been run in the past, the same feelings MANY of us have.

Your link to Swann is of Jeff Wise, not Hurley and he says nothing about busing.

Also, as far as Hurley saying that to Swann, he said he "valued diversity" but never came out and said "Yes, I support busing".

Yes, we have one child - our son will begin kindergarten next year (2012-2013 school year) in CMS.

My wife and I are both products of public schools. She is a middle school band director (in CMS) because of the huge influence her middle school band director had on her.

So Wiley if my facts are correct that Wise doesnt have a child attending CMS and Nelson does not like CMS, then maybe I am right that when Hurley states (in the video you want watch)the he wants to break up schools that are over 60% minority and have failing test scores and the believes school should not be one predominate race and that students should be strategically relocated- he is talking about busing. What else would he be is he saying? how are you going to get schools under 60% of one race without putting kids on a bus? Is he going to relocate families? He said in an early video that he admires Tate the best of current school board-members Tate supports Busing.

Here is another video you wont watch: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XI8hQF_mijY

I would suggest you look at Larry he says the same thing to every group. His platform and party have at least remained consent.

Ann Doss Helms said...

I had the same reaction to Hurley's comments in the Swann video (I also wondered if he knew that there already are plenty of schools that met the percentages he described as unacceptable). But I asked him very specifically in a follow-up interview and he said he does not support busing for demographic balance and is fine with high racial concentrations (majority or minority) if that reflects the neighborhood. He may have changed or clarified his position, but he's pretty firm on it now, from what I can tell

Ann Doss Helms said...

I should probably clarify: My reaction was that his statements would require significant changes in student assignment to avoid those concentrations -- I'm not giving a "ditto" to anyone's reaction on whether that's good or bad.

Vote Jeff Wise said...

To Anonymous 11:34a, November 3:

I don't have a child in CMS at present, but do have a wife who teaches (her 14th year of teaching at that) and a fair number of teachers have expressed their support to me.

Saying then that I have no support would probably be more due to running unaffliated than not having a child in the system I reckon.

Still, all those who've expressed and showed their support of my campaign may be a bit surprised to learn that I have no support.

Somebody ought to let them know.
