New CMPD data on school arrests

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have new data out on the number and type of arrests they've made on Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools campuses so far this school year. They've also compared those numbers to corresponding figures for the same period in the previous school year.

There's lots of things missing from the data. For instance, full school years aren't covered. Nor are schools in the outlying suburbs, such as Butler High, which don't have Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers on their campuses. It also doesn't include citations, which an officer might issue instead of arresting a student on a minor charge.

Still, the data gives at least some insight into what's happening in most CMS schools this year, as far as violence and arrests are concerned.

Summary of the data.
School-by-school data listing what each arrest involved.

Schools in the suburbs, like Butler.
Is this freudian? Has the Butler sports reputation entered the subconscience or do we all know how poorly the imports brought into this community by the recruiting efforts has negatively impacted this community.

Ann,

What happened to the CMS searchable database by school that has been on the page?

Thanks.....

Did you see that Myers Park had 29? Isn't Myers Park known for being more "upscale". I was just surprised by that number, considering its reputation.

Also, it would be interesting to see a break down of student arrest vs non student arrests. The elementary numbers obviously aren't arrest of 5th graders.

Rocky River is not on the list. They've made the news this year some...fight...weapons. How'd they get by?

Rats, Wiley, you caught me. I had our online folks take it down. It's great, but only if the data is fresh. I hadn't updated it at all this school year, partly because I fell behind and partly because database editor Ted Mellnik, who plays a crucial role in refreshing that site, had the gall to leave us for a yearlong academic fellowship.

You know how Peter Gorman talks about doing less with less? I'm afraid we're in the same boat. With Observer furloughs, CMS's barrage of extra news and meetings and the demands of keeping up with today's media environment (such as taking on this blog), I had to give up something.

This is a CMPD report. North Meck, Hough, Hopewell as well as some other schools are manned by the smaller agencies (like Huntersville, Cornelius, Matthews) resource officers.

By the looks of some of these arrests it seems that alot of these arrests took place at schools when sporting events were going on. Look at the dates then compare to school sports calendars and then ask were these arrest students at the school or vistors attending games and because it was on the school campus the school gets the mark. This information can and will be misused to pit on school against another. Also, CMS should release ALL data from ALL police departments that handle CMS schools.
The Matthews, Mint Hill, Pineville and Huntersville schools are not listed and they should be since they are apart of CMS.
Hopefully, the above listed Departments will release their numbers now.

The CO needs to call the other Police Departments and get the police reports from the schools that they(PD) respond to.
This is public records and have to be released.
Matthews is good about giving this info out. Just call and request the info and they will print it out and have it ready to be picked up.

Ann,

No problem. If I knew where the raw data resided it would help but maybe it isn't that simple...

Your statement about the "data not being any good unless it's fresh" sounds like my argument of the Bright Beginnings data!

D'oh!

Myers Park had 29 and East Meck only had 11. I guess all those Myers Park parents who were screaming about East Meck being a bad school need to take a closer look at their own school.

Please tell the truth about all the dam school stop leaving the whites out

Leaving the whites out?

What a joke.

How about a breakdown of crimes by race and sex.

It will look just like the daily CMPD report, no doubt.

So where's a statement from the local NAACP spokesmouth complaining about putting all those criminals in the "minority" schools?

It's either that or the racism of the arresting officers.

Heard today from a CMS employee that Butler came in with 49. Add that to the number of arrests that occured off campus (football/girls basketball) and the crimes that were covered up......no wonder "Big Daddy Bail Bonds" is a major sponsor.

I was told by a BHS parent that the reason for so many problems is because the East Meck kids are there this year. My response It wasn't an East Meck kid that killed a man on a motorcycle. I had to tell them that things do happen at BHS it's just that the former Principal and Joel Ritchie cover it up. Call Matthews police dept and request a list of all calls to BHS for this year and be prepared to pick your teeth up off the floor.
Stuff happens at ALL schools
