The Charlotte-Mecklenburg school board votes Tuesday on a name for the new elementary school opening in Huntersville in August. Grand Oak, in honor of a stately tree on the grounds, is the top choice of the naming committee, led by Principal Raymond Giovanelli and made up of future parents and faculty.
Other suggestions are Franklin Lyttle Elementary, in honor of a prominent African American farmer from the area, and Stumptown, the name that's been used during construction, based on the road the school is on. Board members could pick one of the three options or go with something entirely different, though that's uncommon.
The $15.3 million school will relieve crowding at Torrence Creek Elementary, which has almost 1,200 students. Board member Rhonda Lennon, who represents that district, has been cheering for the new school every step of the way. She's recovering from hip surgery this week and reports on Facebook that she'd like to attend Tuesday's meeting but may have to settle for checking in electronically.

Why not let companies bid on the naming rights and help pay for the school and save the tax payers some money.

350 years ago, in 1663, King Charles II paid off a huge debt with the Charter of Carolina of 1663. This transferred what is now North and South Carolina to eight men who became known as the "Lords Proprietors."
The new school should honor that important bit of history with the name of:

That might impress the remaining DAR members but the general population in Nomeck huffed over how to pronounce Hough. With a complete population turnover in the last two decades and natives in the area nearly extinct why not give'em what they really want?

While I respect history, and Lytle's contribution, what a great name Grand Oak would be! No one has a clue about the identity of the person whose name adorned my San Diego area elementary school, as no one would Lytle, but "Grand Oak" would truly stand out. My vote is for Grand Oak.

In Matthews the CMS BOE names schools after W. Charlotte teachers or a development miles away from the school.
