CMS to tweak next year's academic calendar

Good news, teachers: You're now likely going to have the day before Thanksgiving off of work. But you'll also have to report for duty a day earlier in the fall.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is planning to ask the school board at next week's meeting to approve a few changes to the academic calendar for the 2015-16 school year. It took me a few moments to figure out the changes, but here they are in a nutshell:

  • Wednesday, Nov. 25 (the day before Thanksgiving) goes from a teacher workday to a holiday.
  • Monday, Aug. 17 becomes a teacher workday. It previously hadn't been on the calendar. That Tuesday through Friday has been workdays before the start of school Monday, Aug. 24.
  • June 13, 2016 comes off the calendar. It had been a teacher workday. The last day of school is June 9.

Take a look at the calendar first approved in May here. Here's the proposed revised calendar.

Don't like it.

This was the calendar teachers and other CMS employees gave up multiple hours of their own time to design. The CMS employees voted on which calendar they wanted. BOE approved the calendar.

But let's have some bureaucrat decide they know better than thousands of CMS employees who voted, an those that offered their time to create the calendar.

Teachers need that second workday at the end of the year - paperwork and then closing out classrooms take time. Now teachers will be "required" to work at the end of the year, unpaid/uncompensated, since their last paid day will be the 10th.

If the schedule were to remain as it is... the principals at schools could informally let teachers know that if they came in a day early on the 17th to set up classrooms they could trade that work for the day before Thanksgiving workday. (compensation takes many forms)
No, CMS wants teachers to come in to talked AT for yet another day.

Last year's changes were designed to offer more time in second semester for make up days - a smart change to the calendar which will come in handy for making up the last few days. Such a problem could not be foreseen by those who designed the calendar and changes were necessary for the good of the system.

This change seems to be arbitrary.

BOE needs to say no to this change.

Maybe some serious discussion about changing the high school start time is in order.

Look at that! CMS is trying to sneak in an extra holiday for 12 month employees!!! You know, the ones who received market adjustments and whose salaries aren't limited by our *wonderful* legislature, are paid for by Eli Broad among others, and who are NOT in front of children day in and day out. These greedy people do not want to have to burn an annual leave day the day before Thanksgiving. Poor babies, let's feel bad for them and give'em an extra day. What crap.

So let's just throw an extra holiday on there - not even sure that is legal, oh and remove one workday from teacher's schedules (15 down to 14,) and make things harder for teachers At the end of the year. Culture of Caring, my asphalt.

This needs to be turned down, period.

Another end run power move by the dictatorship.Stalin would have been proud of your "tweaks". Disregard the time and effort put into the calendar creation, not to mention the democratic process of VOTING on the calendar.

Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.

They need to not worry about this junk and concentrate on school start times.

Seriously remove national holidays as make-up days for inclement weather. These are days that employers give most employees and a day families can spend together. Memorial Day is case-in-point.

And stick to the calendar you spent so much time developing with input!

I have to ask, does this really matter? In the grand scheme of things is this going to make any impact upon the academic performance of children, probably not.

"There’s N.C. Central’s Institute for Civic Engagement and Social Change, which addresses racial, gender and other social injustices. There’s East Carolina’s Center for Biodiversity, which urges North Carolinians to change behavior that’s harmful to our planet.

And, of course, there’s Nichol’s Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity at UNC Chapel Hill."

Back to reality.

This is great stuff by Republicans whacking off trash like this so taxpayers can have a little relief.

These 3 programs should be the tip of the iceberg for liberal freeloaders who think money grows in trees.

The best part is the crybaby article.

Conservative Arts programs are next in line to replace Liberal Arts all all state supported schools.

Time to empty those liberal mush brains of all that massive garbage dump filth.

Same for secondary schools and the much brain liberal trash these teachers fill brains with especially in revisionist pc History where teachers go to the extreme with their mind wash feces.
Get rid of all Womens and Afro useless liberal trash studies.

Time to also cut History teachers fro further damaging student brains. Teach real History only not the revisionist liberal socialist trash.

Teach basic Science or Math or English if you want to teach school. That never changes except for the evolution garbage that will be erased soon too.

Conservative Arts studies in on the move.

Very strange...

Many school systems are ending the practice of costly snow makeups and going to teacher generated online assignments from the teacher's webpage that school systems require. Students would be at home and teachers can monitor.

Many colleges are moving the entire freshman year to online instruction to save on costs.

CMS will have no choice but to move to this model in the near future. Not enough TFA or Lateral Entry to satisfy the future openings. Millions spent to attract union teachers from up North will go by the wayside as well.

All the money will not be spent on teachers but on Chromebooks and software salesmen (GORMAN).Veteran teachers have seen this coming and even the new teachers see the sleaziness of CMS and the general assembly.

The US will soon fall out of the Top 50 in the world of education as China overtakes us economically.

Do teachers actually show up on teacher workday? And if so, do they actually do any work?

In some parts of the US and China this is already true.

another little boy hit at early morning bus stop this morning 6:59am. Why are elementary aged kids at bus stops this early? Ridiculous.

Another post without the facts.

The kid ran out into the road and the bus wasn't stopped yet. It was approaching his home at the time.

Also, what are you going to do if CMS moves the bell schedule and these same type accidents keep occuring where a kid runs out into the street regardless of the time of day?

Again, most accidents occur in the afternoon and not in the mornings. I've posted those stats several times before.

This just in :

The next generation of truck drivers like higher pay.

Average annual pay for drivers was just under $50,000 last year, up roughly 28 percent from around $39,000 in 2000, according to data from ATA and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Drivers who earn specialization in hauling dangerous materials over long distances can earn around $70,000 and up.

"This is a job where wages will continue to go up because drivers are in demand," Costello said. "

Wiley Coyote said...

“The industry is not attracting drivers at anywhere near the rate to keep up with demand and growth,” said Fielkow, whose company Jetco Delivery has about 100 drivers. The drivers’ average age? Early 50s.

Preferred industry among 18- to 24-year-olds if they were beginning their careers

1 Technology
2 Energy
3 Health care
4 Communications
5 Manufacturing
6 Financial services
7 Retail

Driverless trucking obviously would mean thousands of driver jobs lost. Operating costs over the lifetime of a long-haul truck, about 600,000 miles, could drop by about half using self-driving trucks versus trucks with drivers, according to estimates from The Boston Consulting Group.

I am surprised education was not on the list... Just kidding..

Beware of those "jobs of the future".

Technology has a way of disrupting most of those straight line projections that those who predict such things like to use.

Consider this growth opportunity of the past:

"In 1894, the Times of London estimated that by 1950 every street in the city would be buried nine feet deep in horse manure. One New York prognosticator of the 1890s concluded that by 1930 the horse droppings would rise to Manhattan’s third-story windows."

Well, I guess THOSE "shovel ready" jobs didn't quite turn out as predicted.

We'll probably NEVER see that happen again, said the telephone switchboard operator.

And the linotype operator.

And the stenographer.

And the COBOL programmer.

But truckers?

Nah, that will NEVER HAPPEN.

Our nation and government will not demand trucks run on natural gas. Good luck waiting on the driver less trucks in the US.

Yeah, those Mexican drivers will probably still be cheaper for a while.
